Housing Assistance

To be placed in contact with a Department of Social Services caseworker, please complete a request for service here.

Housing and the Department of Social Services

  • For homelessness, complete a Temporary Assistance application with the Department of Social Services (DSS), indicating that they are homeless with nowhere to go and are requesting placement.  Call the toll-free Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance Hotline at 800-342-3009 or local DSS at 845-334-5000.
  • FAMILY of Woodstock has emergency housing for individuals and families at their recently renovated Darmstadt Shelter and FAMILY Inn in Kingston.  During the Day, a referral from DSS is required.  After hours and on weekends, FAMILY uses federal emergency funds, when available, to provide a single night's stay in an area motel.  Call or text, 24/7, to 845-679-2485.  See their website.
  • For domestic violence survivors, FAMILY's Washbourne House offers hotlines, support groups, Spanish-speaking domestic violence services, family court advocacy, as well as safe shelter and comprehensive, trauma-informed services to survivors of domestic violence and their children.  Visit their website.
  • For help with the cost of home heating, DSS is a local contact for the Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP), which helps low-income people who may be eligible for emergency HEAP benefits if they are in danger of running out of fuel or having their utility service shut off.  Contact DSS at 845-334-5436.

Housing and Mental Health (DOHMH)

The Ulster County Department of Health and Mental Health has the capacity to help people struggling with mental health issues navigate housing options.

  • People USA's Rose Houses are short-term crisis respites that are home-like alternatives to hospital psychiatric ERs and inpatient units.  Rose Houses are open and immediately accessible 24/7/365 for hospital diversion.  The service is 100% voluntary.  While at Rose House, guests have access to a full, customizable menu of services.  Guests can stay up to five nights, and they can come and go for appointments, jobs, and other essential needs.  See their website.

For more information about this and other County programs, contact the Ulster County Service Center (845) 443-8888 or ulstercountyserves.com.
